Protected Area


Sobrescobio is a mainly rural council outside the industrialization of the Cuenca del Nalón, what has allowed preserving some of the most valuable landscapes and ecosystems of the Cantabrian Range. The whole council of Sobrescobio and the neighbouring council of Caso are part of the Natural Park of Redes, a privileged place to live and visit, declared Reserve of the Biosphere by the UNESCO in 2001.

The excellent condition of the ecosystems and its forest resources and wildlife have given other environmental recognitions, in this way, it belongs to the Red Natura 2000 (Natura Net 2000), for being considered as Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria (LIC) – Place of Communal Importance- and it is also an Area of Special Protection for Birds (ZEPA), since 2003.


Besides, the Route of Alba, which runs on the valley of the river with the same name, was declared in 2001 Natural Monument, and it is one of the most important and visited places, not only in the Natural Park of Redes, but throughout region.
